Create Your Own TeamSpeak Server: How to Do It Properly

Create Your Own TeamSpeak Server: How to Do It Properly

Your own TeamSpeak server lets you communicate independently with your community, clan or team.

Setup at a glance

  1. Choose a server
  2. Install TeamSpeak
  3. Configure the firewall
  4. Set up administrator rights
  5. Create channels and groups
  6. Secure the server

1. Choose a suitable server

A small KVM or VPS server is usually sufficient for smaller groups. A stable connection and enough resources for the expected number of users are what matter most.

2. Install TeamSpeak

Download the appropriate server version, extract it on your server and then start the server application.

3. Configure the firewall

The required ports must be opened so users can connect. Voice connections commonly use the default port 9987.

Protocol: UDP

4. Set up administrator rights

The first start normally provides a privilege key. Keep it safe, as it allows you to sign in as the server administrator.

5. Create channels and groups

  • Lobby and welcome area
  • Channels for different games or teams
  • Moderator and administration area
  • Individual permissions for user groups
  • Temporary rooms for visitors

6. Secure the server

Use secure passwords, keep the TeamSpeak software up to date and open only the ports that are actually required.

Conclusion

A dedicated TeamSpeak server can be operated flexibly on a suitable KVM or VPS server. After installation, permissions, firewall configuration and regular updates are particularly important.
